    Updated: 2012-08-31 13:54:00
Manchester Liberal Democrats were out in force during last weekend's Manchester Pride Festival. Marc Ramsbottom, the Lib Dem candidate in the Manchester Central By-Election and John Leech MP led the Lib Dem contingent on the Pride parade. Around 20 Manchester Liberal Democrat Councillors and activists marched in the parade to promote Liberal Democrat campaigns for Equal Marriage and John Leech MP's campaign to pardon Alan Turing, the Gay WW2 Hero and Father of Computer Science. Many other Liberal Democrat activists were also taking part in the parade with organisations ranging from Manchester University to the Village Manchester Football Club. City ...

  • Spinning in opposition

    Updated: 2012-08-31 08:55:00
Another example of spin this morning, this time from the opposition with yet more calls by the Welsh Tories to scrap free prescriptions in Wales. The Western Mail reports that more than two and a half million additional prescription items were dispensed in Wales in the last year, That makes it the 11th year in a row that the number has gone up. In all 72.7 million prescription items were issued in 2011-2012, up from 70.1 million the previous year. From the point of view of the Tories, this is more ammunition in their long campaign to reintroduce prescription charges ...

  • LibLink: Paddy Ashdown "Liberal Democrats must back Nick Clegg and let him finish the job"

    Updated: 2012-08-31 08:52:29
[IMG: Paddy Ashdown] In today's Guardian, Paddy Ashdown responds to Matthew Oakeshott's call upon party members to consider replacing Nick Clegg as Leader in typically direct style; All party dissidents, minor or not, suddenly find themselves welcome on every front page and in every news studio. Opinion pollsters, out of business during the dead days of summer, suddenly find themselves able to use a late August poll to predict the outcome of an election still three years away. I remember one in 1995, two years from the election in which the Liberal Democrats doubled their seats, which had me losing ...

  • A Bridgend Too Far...

    Updated: 2012-08-31 00:00:00
We only have a single by-election to report on this week, the Bettws ward of Bridgend. Despite having run the council as recently as 2008, we not only didn't stand a candidate but we hadn't run one last time either. Whilst that means our vote-share hasn't decreased, a growing reputation for not showing up is something the party might wish to avoid! Admittedly, a Lib Dem presence on the ballot might not have dented the Labour Party's eventual eighty per cent share of the vote, but there is still a principle at stake and we hope that no stone was ...

  • Paddy Ashdown calls on Lib Dems to back Nick Clegg

    Updated: 2012-08-30 20:57:00
Responding to the media chatter around Nick Clegg's position as Liberal Democrat leader, Paddy Ashdown has an article in tomorrow's Guardian calling on the party to back him: We will be judged at the next election by one fact and one fact only. Whether we have had the mettle to stay the course in delivering effective government for our country at a time of crisis. That is the only thing that matters. All the rest is the froth. And When we all overwhelmingly supported Nick Clegg's decision to lead us into government, we knew it would be difficult. We also knew ...

  • Amberley Slope site visit by Cllr Darren Fower and Cllr Julia Davidson

    Updated: 2012-08-30 19:34:54
Having talked about how I wanted to try out combining blogging with the music service Spotify in my last post — I thought I'd better make a start. Last year, for my 40th Birthday, I gave myself a project to come up with a playlist for what I would like to have played at my birthday party. Not that I actually had a party, sadly. The rules were that there should be 40 tracks – one for each year between 1971 and 2011, that they should be played in chronological order going by year of release (although I ended up ...
